So I’m about to turn 30 — hooray, happy 3rd decade to me. My twenties are riding into the sunset and it occurred to me that I’ve learnt alot in the last 3 decades and maybe it’s worth sharing this with planet earth. So here’s the 50 or so (I tried to do 30 lessons in 30 years but I just had too much to share) I’ve learnt in the last 30 years — maybe they will be of help to you too.
(I also published this as a reminder to myself of the guiding principles I should try to aim for too)
- Create yourself, you don’t find yourself
- Know your values and what you stand for
- Love yourself
- Know your worth
- Be passionate about something
- Be loved
- Love someone else
- Love can hurt and heartbreak will happen, it’s part of the process
- You will fail many, many times — don’t give up
- Don’t be afraid to change
- Embrace fear — it’s the only way you’ll evolve
- Meditate, start a relaxation practise — whatever it is, find your anchor
- Move more — your body needs it
- Eat healthy 80–90% of the time
- Embracing different cultures gives you perspective and awareness
- Tell people your real feelings
- Never pretend to be something you’re not
- Tell those you love, that you love them everyday
- Change is inevitable
- Read often
- Challenge yourself daily
- Find good people and appreciate them
- Live in the moment
- Money won’t bring happiness
- Happiness is what’s most important
- Be open minded
- Have more than one stream of revenue (create a non-job)
- Seize opportunities
- Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd
- The mind is your most powerful weapon, best friend and sometimes worst enemy
- Laugh often
- Create something — doesn’t matter what it is
- Stay hungry and humble
- Always say please and thank you, no matter the situation
- A smile can change someones day
- Love people not things
- If you’re wrong, admit it
- Dance and sing often
- You don’t stop learning, be curious
- Success is personal and defined only by you
- Family and friends are key
- Learn to listen, like really listen
- Understand when to rest and when to grind
- Never be afraid to ask for help
- You can be a student and the master
- Ask questions, be inquisitive
- Turn thought to action — do something
- Write down your thoughts and experiences — they may be useful one day
- Give back and share
- Experiment, change lanes, don’t be boxed by society
- You’re the master of your own destiny
- Do everything with confidence and self belief
- The only real risk you face is your own inaction and the regrets it will bring
- The only person in your way is you
- Simplify
