Deep Thoughts

50 or so lessons I’ve learnt in 30 years

So I’m about to turn 30 — hooray, happy 3rd decade to me. My twenties are riding into the sunset and it occurred to me that I’ve learnt alot in the last 3 decades and maybe it’s worth sharing this with planet earth. So here’s the 50 or so (I tried to do 30 lessons in 30 years but I just had too much to share) I’ve learnt in the last 30 years — maybe they will be of help to you too.

(I also published this as a reminder to myself of the guiding principles I should try to aim for too)

  1. Create yourself, you don’t find yourself
  2. Know your values and what you stand for
  3. Love yourself
  4. Know your worth
  5. Be passionate about something
  6. Be loved
  7. Love someone else
  8. Love can hurt and heartbreak will happen, it’s part of the process
  9. You will fail many, many times — don’t give up
  10. Don’t be afraid to change
  11. Embrace fear — it’s the only way you’ll evolve
  12. Meditate, start a relaxation practise — whatever it is, find your anchor
  13. Move more — your body needs it
  14. Eat healthy 80–90% of the time
  15. Embracing different cultures gives you perspective and awareness
  16. Tell people your real feelings
  17. Never pretend to be something you’re not
  18. Tell those you love, that you love them everyday
  19. Change is inevitable
  20. Read often
  21. Challenge yourself daily
  22. Find good people and appreciate them
  23. Live in the moment
  24. Money won’t bring happiness
  25. Happiness is what’s most important
  26. Be open minded
  27. Have more than one stream of revenue (create a non-job)
  28. Seize opportunities
  29. Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd
  30. The mind is your most powerful weapon, best friend and sometimes worst enemy
  31. Laugh often
  32. Create something — doesn’t matter what it is
  33. Stay hungry and humble
  34. Always say please and thank you, no matter the situation
  35. A smile can change someones day
  36. Love people not things
  37. If you’re wrong, admit it
  38. Dance and sing often
  39. You don’t stop learning, be curious
  40. Success is personal and defined only by you
  41. Family and friends are key
  42. Learn to listen, like really listen
  43. Understand when to rest and when to grind
  44. Never be afraid to ask for help
  45. You can be a student and the master
  46. Ask questions, be inquisitive
  47. Turn thought to action — do something
  48. Write down your thoughts and experiences — they may be useful one day
  49. Give back and share
  50. Experiment, change lanes, don’t be boxed by society
  51. You’re the master of your own destiny
  52. Do everything with confidence and self belief
