The effect you have on others is the most valuable currency

A few days back I was scouring through YouTube, watching random videos to fill in 10 minutes of my life (an effective use of my time – I know!).

I came across a video called “The Meaning” featuring Jim Carrey, it’s one of those motivational videos that generally I steer clear from, but there was something different about this one, I was seduced by the title and quickly pressed play to find out more.

I can wholeheartedly say that video was one of the most powerful forms of media I’ve ever watched and I also have a new found admiration for the intellect of Jim Carrey.

The clip was full of fantastic snippets of advice but the one quote that resonated with me the most was “The effect you have on others, is the most valuable currency you have”.

I’ve made a myriad of changes to my life in the last few years. A particular focus has been appreciating people instead of things, which has been a major and much needed area of growth.

The one thing I’ve noticed and continue to see in this crazy thing called life, is that it’s all about the people.

When it’s all said and done, I’m not going to be sitting there thinking “wow, i had a great life with my iphone and trendy white converse” – screw that, I want to be reflecting on the great relationships I have, how I affected those people of my past & present.

Did I bring them joy? Did I challenge them? Did we make each other better people?.

The most powerful thing we can do as humans, is make a choice on what we do and how we can affect others – we can inspire, motivate and bring joy or we can be miserable.

Life as we always hear is precious and when we reflect on it all, wouldn’t you want to feel like you brought joy, happiness and love to those around you.

We all have this power to affect anyone in a positive or negative way, my nice shiny converse are never going to make me laugh or hug me (but they will stress me out with simplicity of how they can become dirty so quickly) but you can, you have this amazing ability to make people laugh, smile or even cry.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m looking back on my life, I want to be smiling.

Smiling at the fact of how I affected people, that I inspired some, made many smile, laugh and loved many.
